Aachen West Depot Aitch Dee Arr

Notes

Since I have my new tripod I wanted to try out some HDR, so here you go: An HDR picture. Shown is the long-disused locomotive depot of Aachen West station. In the foreground you can see its turntable. As for the other things, I’d like to know what the huge tower in the middle is as much as anybody, and to the left there’s a fire station.

There is a club which wants to turn this depot into a museum. There is also a university, the RWTH Aachen University (where I’m a student) to be precise, which wants to build a new top-modern campus on this site and then some in the not-so-far future. I’m not sure if and if yes how theses interests can be brought together. Now, as much as I’d love a museum railroad, I’d guess that the university will get it’s wish due to being important for the city and having money, which the club can’t claim.

HDR photography is something I find a little weird. As some may know, computer graphics is a hobby for me, and I do understand the advantages of HDR images when you’re using, say, dynamic tone mapping (where you use the part of the range of a texture that corresponds to the lighting). But doing all this work, just to compress it into a more-or-less weird looking 8 bit/channel image sounds like an abuse of the procedure. Oh well, I’ll play with it some more and see whether it’s fun in the long term.
