Notes
I wish I knew more about this historic narrow gauge steam train I saw in Interlaken, but it was pure coincidence when we, waiting for our train to Zweisimmen, smelled the steam engine.
Thanks to an overabundance of electricity, the age of steam locomotives ended very quickly in Switzerland. Today, even diesel locomotives are seen but rarely (for work trains, international service and serving local industries which don’t have overhead equipment mainly). Seeing steam of any sort in the country today is consequently rather rare, except on a few museum lines. Apparently, the combined network of Zentralbahn and BOB (Berner Oberland-Bahn, not to be confused with MOB), which intersect and have connections in Interlaken Ost, is also the home of one of them, the Ballenberg Dampfbahn Brienz.
