Milan, hometown of Alfa Romeo and quirky orange streetcars. I don’t see how a city could possibly be any better.
These Peter Witte streetcars were built in the 1920’s. When I took this picture in the fall of 2005, they were still in widespread use for lines with lower passenger counts, although it seems they have gone through some major rebuilds in the meantime. They used to have a different color and certainly different pantographs. I love this picture, I really do. It’s one of my desktop wallpapers, in fact.
You can also find them in San Francisco. And with that I mean precisely them, orange and with italian signs and advertisement still in them. Kinda odd if you’ve been to Milan first and then go to San Francisco, only to see precisely the same streetcars again. There, they are part of F line, where historic streetcars drive you around. Well, historic is a relative term, it seems, but they are still fun, so I won’t complain.
