Unidentified 50.35

Unidentified 50.35

Notes

So, the steam locomotive part in all of this. I think this is a DR class 50.35, which means a class 50 steam locomotive that underwent a major overhaul of all systems, most importantly receiving a new boiler since the old boiler turned out to develop a tendency to crack and later explode over time.

Oddly, this locomotive has no owner or road number markings at all, so I’m proud that I managed to identify it (hopefully correctly) as a 50.35 already. Many classes received such overhauls in the GDR, and they are collectively known as “Rekoloks”. They can usually be recognized by the trapezoid mixing preheater (is that word correct? It’s what leo.org says, but sounds wrong) in front of the chimney. The 1’E (you could call that a 2-10-0 if you wanted to. I don’t) configuration means it’s either a 50 or a 52 (which was a cheaper version of the 50 for mass production during the second world war), and the fact that the cab has two side windows means it’s probably a 50. The front side window was one of the things that had to go when making the cheaper 52.

One of the guys around told me that it was just spending the night here, and the train would continue elsewhere saturday.
