Notes
The Atomium was the official landmark of the Expo ‘58, and has become the symbol for all of Brussels, a story similar to the Eifelturm. From many view points, it looks hexagonal, but it really isn’t: It’s really a body-centered cubic primitive cell, in particular that of iron, magnified 165 billion times and put on a corner. It looks quite awesome from up close.
Of course, when Hanover had the Expo in 2000, they completely neglected to build anything equally nice, the only thing even coming close (the post box) was torn down, and the whale (that was voted as official landmark in some poll) was just stupid. But that’s just the disappointed lower-saxon in me talking. Hanover just is boring, I guess I’ll have to live with that.
