Notes

Today, we finally had the snow I’ve been waiting for since before christmas to take pictures of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen in. So my father and I went off to Drei Annen Hohne and took pictures.

Drei Annen Hohne is the point where the Brockenbahn (the line leading up to the Brocken, the highest mountain of northern Germany) splits off from the mainline Wernigerode - Nordhausen, the Harzquerbahn (Harz cross line). On this picture, the latter is to the left and the Brocken Line to the right, and 99 7240, a 1’E1’ (that’d be 2-8-2 in american notation, but neither me nor this locomotive are american) “Neubaulokomotive” (new, i.e. post-war, locomotive), pulls a train from Nordhausen into the station.

It’s too bad that the locomotive is facing the wrong way around. The boilers of the locomotives are always pointed south on this network, and since this locomotive is on it’s way north you can only see the tender end. On the other hand, there sure is enough steam.
