The NOHABs are some of the most interesting locomotives in europe, or at least I think so, and this is my site, damn it! The locomotives were built by swedish company NOHAB (hence the name) in license from EMD. Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a belgian Nohab, as the belgian ones were built in sub-license by a belgian company.
The locomotives are often called the european version of EMD’s F, which isn’t wrong. Historically, however, they are more the european version of the Class GM (picture by Alxyt) built by Clyde with an EMD license, which is in turn the australian version of the F. Like the E, it has A1A’ A1A’ wheel arrangement (in UIC notation), but unlike the E and like the F, it has only one diesel engine. They also used to have a typical, albeit somewhat changed, bulldog snout, but sadly the belgian ones lost this during reconstructions.
This example belongs to class 53, meaning it’s a pure freight machine, and has here pulled a train with equipment and material, apparently intended for the station itself.
