Notes

I’ve been talking about [old signals on recently-rebuilt routes](/en/trains/Old%20Signal), and I actually wanted to post an image from Goslar. But while organizing my images by station, I came across this one, taken right in Stolberg Altstadt, one of the four end points of the Euregiobahn, which I was talking about then. As I said before, the line has been completely rebuilt (notice the clean ballast and concrete ties), but the old semaphores still remain.

Germany has, generally speaking, still lots of old semaphores, significantly more than many other countries. In fact, there are still spare parts being produced for them, and then there is one curious fact about this one: Each and every semaphore has to be lit at night. Now, the lamps for this one are extremely small. Why? Because the classic propane lamps are being replaced with new, more efficient and maintenance-free LED lights in semaphores all over Germany. I have no idea whether this is cool or a waste of time, but I find it interesting either way.
