The Stadsgewestelijk Materieel (SGM), also known as Plan Y, Elektrisch Materieel ‘74 or classes 2000 and 2800 (2100 and 2900 after rebuild), official nickname Sprinter, is a dutch kind of EMU built by Talbot (now Bombardier Transportation) in Aachen in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It has comparatively many doors and high acceleration, enabling S-Bahn like fast commuter services.
What I really like about this one is all the equipment on the roof (probably braking resistors) with what looks like a walkway. In this combination it looks as if the train has packed some baggage on top for a longer trip.
A newer version is the Sprinter Lighttrain, so called apparently not because of weight but because of it’s large windows. While I’m at it, may I remark how odd it is that the dutch have, compared to germany, very large windows in their houses, but generally very small windows in their trains? Anyway, thanks to my industrial espionage skills I actually have a (bad) picture of one of the new SLTs while testing. It’s not longer that impressive anymore now that it has taken on regular service, but I don’t have a better one. That train is, by the way, based on the german class 425 family.
