Particle System working
This post was supposed to be longer, but I accidentally deleted my WIP-screenshots, thinking they were older ones. But who cares, the important thing is that I have a complete, working particle system.
In case you have no idea what a particle system is: Lots of graphic effects in computer games are done with particles, basically textured points moving around. This can be used for fire, smoke, gun effects, splashing water, weather and even loading coal on railroad wagons (in Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004, for example).
My implementation still lacks some planned features (specifically, I would like if I could set some aspects randomly, which I can’t do right now), but it does display smoke for my snow mobile. The smoke looks nice from every direction and fades into the background. It wasn’t really easy to do this, but not exactly very hard to do it, either. The worst part was getting the smoke to display correctly from every position, since the smoke is only 2D in a 3D world. If you ever happen on the same problem, the best (because easiest) description on how to do this can be found in theiDevGame forum.
So finally, we come to the screenshot which illustrates my point. By the way, I’m not yet sure about where I’ll set my game, so if I decide to locate in a country with stricter environmental regulations, I’ll have to reduce the smoke.
