Notes

Two belgian class 55 units are getting ready to take over a train in Aachen West. It took me ages to get a good picture of these units (this is still not perfect), but they are very, very common round here. Notice that I got actually the rear of the two units. If we all keep quiet about that, that’ll be no problem.

The technology behind these engines should be familiar to americans: They use EMD 16-567C engines. I’m not sure whether they were built partly or fully by EMD, because all information about those units is in french (which I speak badly) or dutch (which I don’t speak at all, although it’s similar enough to german that I can read some of it), and generally not very detailed. What I did manage to find out, however, is that due to the distinctive sound of these two-stroke engines, they are informally known as "Mopeds" in Belgium.
